Drainage is extremely important on any property, and the gutters play an essential role in it. As rainwater and other precipitation falls on your roof, the gutters capture it, channeling it into the downspouts and away from vulnerable areas of your property. To ensure this process can take place reliably, you need to choose the right gutters for your home.

How to Choose Gutters for Your Home

Here are a few tips for choosing gutters:

  • Size – Avoid installing gutters that are larger than necessary, but more importantly, avoid installing gutters that are too small. Most gutters will come in 5” or 6” options, and the right size for your home will depend on factors such as the roof size, roof pitch, surroundings (e.g., trees), and the amount of rainfall in your area.
  • Design – Many gutters come in sections that are joined together along your roofline, but with these you run the risk of leaks occurring in the spots where the seams are located. Seamless gutters are made custom for your home and significantly reduce the risk of leaks. Seamless gutters will always be the superior option, but sectional gutters are acceptable.
  • Style – Choose gutters that suit the architectural style of your home. Most modern American homes will have K-style gutters, which is a boxy style that imitates crown molding. Half-round gutters are another popular choice and are used on older styles and historical homes.
  • Material – The gutter material you select will determine how long your gutters last and how durable they will be. Some common materials include vinyl, aluminum, PVC, copper, and galvanized steel.
